Lime plaster is typically surface-dry within two to five days per coat, but it continues to harden by carbonation for weeks or months afterwards. A working rule of thumb is roughly one day per millimetre of thickness before overcoating — longer in cold or damp conditions — and around four weeks or more before decorating with breathable paint. Limewash is the exception: it can go onto fresh lime almost straight away.
Drying and carbonation are two different things
The question "how long does lime plaster take to dry?" actually contains two questions, and the answers are very different.
Drying is water leaving the plaster. Depending on thickness, background suction and room conditions, a coat of lime plaster loses its surface wetness within a few days and most of its free water within a couple of weeks.
Carbonation is how lime actually hardens. Non-hydraulic lime does not set by drying at all — it sets by slowly absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and converting back to calcium carbonate, effectively turning back into a soft limestone on your wall. That process works inwards from the surface over weeks and months, and it needs some moisture present to happen. Natural hydraulic limes (NHL) gain part of their strength from a chemical set with water in the first days and weeks, but they carbonate over the long term too.
This is why lime work cannot be judged, or rushed, the way gypsum can. Plaster that feels dry to the touch after three days is nowhere near fully hardened — and, counterintuitively, drying it out too fast actually weakens it, because carbonation stalls in plaster that has been forced dry.
Rules of thumb per coat
Every specialist has slightly different habits, and conditions on site override any rule. As broad guides, though:
- Allow roughly one day per millimetre of coat thickness before applying the next coat — so a 10 mm scratch coat wants in the order of a week to ten days in reasonable conditions.
- In cold, damp or still conditions, extend those times substantially. Below about 8°C everything slows; below 5°C work should stop.
- Thicker dubbing-out coats on uneven stone need proportionally longer, and are one reason old-building programmes stretch.
- The next coat goes on when the previous one is firm and has taken its initial shrinkage — judged by eye and thumb, not just by the calendar.
Typical waits between scratch, float and set coats
For a traditional three-coat job on masonry in decent conditions: the scratch coat usually waits around one to two weeks before the float coat; the float coat waits a similar period, sometimes a little less, before the fine set coat; and the set coat, being only 2–3 mm thick, is surface-dry within days but carbonates for weeks. In cold weather, on damp walls, or with putty rather than NHL mixes, each of those intervals stretches — an unheated cottage plastered in late autumn behaves nothing like a ventilated room in May.
When can you decorate lime plaster?
- Limewash: almost immediately. Limewash is lime in water, so it bonds happily to fresh plaster — traditional practice often puts the first coat on while the plaster is still green, and it carbonates along with the wall.
- Breathable paints (clay paints, silicate/mineral paints, genuinely breathable emulsions): typically after around four weeks or more, once the plaster has dried through and the surface is well into carbonation. Follow the paint manufacturer's guidance on new lime — some silicate paints want longer or a primer on fresh alkaline surfaces.
- Standard emulsion or vinyl paint: never — not just "not yet". A conventional plastic emulsion seals the surface, blocks the breathability that justified using lime in the first place, and commonly fails by peeling as moisture pushes from behind. If it will not let water vapour through, it does not belong on lime.
If a decorator is booked, tell them the walls are lime and agree the paint system before they price the job. Undoing the wrong paint from new lime plaster is miserable work.
Conditions change everything
Any drying time you read — including the ones above — assumes reasonable conditions. Four things move the real answer, sometimes by a factor of two or more.
- Temperature. Lime is happiest roughly between 8°C and 25°C. Cold slows drying and carbonation to a crawl; a frost on uncarbonated plaster can destroy it outright.
- Humidity. A damp room, a wet wall or a Welsh November all slow drying. Some ambient humidity is actually helpful for carbonation — bone-dry air is not the goal — but saturated air stops drying altogether.
- Ventilation. Gentle, consistent air movement carries moisture away and supplies the carbon dioxide carbonation needs. Sealed-up rooms slow everything; howling draughts and dehumidifiers parked against the wall dry the surface too fast.
- Background suction. A dry, absorbent brick wall pulls water out of the plaster quickly; dense stone or a damp wall gives it up slowly. This is why the same mix behaves differently from one room to the next, and why backgrounds are dampened before plastering to control suction.
Protecting fresh lime while it cures
Fresh lime plaster has two enemies: frost and rapid drying. Good practice for the first days and weeks looks like this.
- Keep it frost-free until well carbonated — background heat in cold weather, and no plastering at all when frost is forecast on unprotected work.
- Slow the drying, don't force it. No heaters or dehumidifiers aimed at the wall, no full sun through a window onto fresh work; mist the surface with clean water if it is drying too fast (crazing is the tell-tale).
- Ventilate gently and consistently rather than in bursts.
- Externally, keep new render or plaster shaded and damp behind hessian or sheeting, re-wetting as needed in warm weather.
Signs it's ready
- Uniform light colour across the wall, with no darker damp patches — patchy colour means it is still drying unevenly.
- Surface feels hard and dry, and does not mark or dent under a thumbnail pressed firmly.
- No cool, clammy feel against the back of your hand compared with a known-dry wall.
- For decorating: the waiting periods above have passed for the conditions you actually had, not the conditions the calendar promised.
How does this compare with gypsum plaster?
Since most drying-time advice online is written for gypsum, it is worth being clear about the difference. Gypsum plaster sets chemically within hours and a skim coat is typically dry enough to paint in around three to seven days — up to a few weeks for plaster on fresh backgrounds — with a mist coat of watered-down emulsion first. Lime works on an entirely different clock: days to feel dry, weeks between coats and before painting, months to full hardness. That patience is not a flaw in the material; it is the price of a finish that breathes, flexes with an old building and lasts for generations. If your plasterer is not building that time into the programme, they are not really pricing a lime job.
